What to expect at your newborn session?

When you book a session, you will fill out a questionnaire asking you what colors and props you would like this is how I will choose what to set up before your session. I have so many props that it would be difficult to choose the day of. Below I will walk you through what a newborn session will look like.

First, we will start with family photos if you choose the family package. We will do this at the beginning of your session so that you can relax and if there are any siblings, we will do those first. We will take photos with the whole family mom dad and baby as well as mom with baby and dad with baby. We will also do sibling photos if there are siblings. This part of the session usually takes around 30 minutes.

We usually go straight from family photos to the nest image as baby is already swaddled. These images will also be put into digital backdrops in Photoshop. These are based on what I think looks best with shadows and position of baby. I will keep in mind the overall look of your session and colors that you chose. I usually do 2 digital backdrops. Here are some examples.

Next, I usually like to go to beanbag. This is where you will see all of the solid-colored backdrops and babies on their tummy’s backs and sides. I usually like to do one wrapped and one outfit. I will choose the color of fabric based on the colors you put in your questionnaire I also like to use cream a lot as it gives us different options for the color of outfits and wraps we use. We usually do one color here for the backdrop. The poses we take on the backdrop will all depend on baby and what they allow me to do. Here are some examples.

Last, we will do two BIG props. These are the props that you see on my website bed, moon, bowl bucket etc. Here are some examples. You will pick your favorite two on the booking form.

These are all samples of multiple sessions. When booking please keep in mind that not every baby will do every pose. Newborns are little humans, and they are all different. I will let baby lead me and go off of what baby allows me to do while keeping them safe and happy. While these images may look very simple and easy to do, I will take my time to prefect each pose right down to their little fingers and toes, each pose can take up to 30 minutes. If there is a pose, they don’t like we will adjust or move on as needed. We will have to also adjust some posing if baby is older than 2 weeks or awake. Either way I will provide a beautiful gallery to choose your images from.

Example Of a Full Session

Here is an example of a full session. Every baby is different, and every session will look a little different depending on the colors and props that you choose for your session but here is an example of a full edited gallery with images that the parents choose from their proofing gallery. They chose the Elite package 30 images. You will receive a watermarked un-edited proofing gallery of approximately 40-80 photos to choose from depending on your package. You will then choose the images you would like for your package to be edited 10, 15, 20 or 30 depending on the package you have booked. The images you chose will be edited and you will be sent a brand-new gallery for you with the final edited images to download!

When to book?

All newborn sessions take place in our studio located in Modesto California. Newborn sessions typically take 2-3 hours. This will allow for feedings and diaper changes as needed. I usually only do one newborn session per day, so it is best to book 1-2 months in advance if possible. We will book ahead of time based on your due date this will hold your spot for when baby is born. Once baby is here, we will then choose an exact date in the first 5-14 days after birth. I only take a limited number of newborn sessions per month to guarantee availability if baby comes early or late, so it is best to book your session ahead of time to get on my schedule. Please reach out with any questions you may have.

James was my first newborn session in the new photography studio. Not only was he the first newborn but he is also my nephew, how awesome is that?   His mommy picked out greens and browns and I think the colors look amazing together. It makes my heart happy to be back in my home town of Manteca California and I am excited what the future will bring.

Review:

“These editing videos are amazing! No detail is left out! If ever you wanted to know Jessica’s editing workflow, look no further! She goes over anything and everything you could ever wonder when it comes to her editing. She is a complete open book in these videos and shows everything she does, while describing everything along the way. Each editing video provides such variety, and she is sure to explain every little step she is taking in detail (AND doing it SLOWLY so beginners could even follow along super easily and take notes along the way without getting frustrated). She also gives some super awesome tips throughout each video, which I thought was awesome and very beneficial to someone who might not know all the ins & outs of Photoshop. I especially loved how she would show how to do a particular step by doing it using an action, but also by doing it by hand for those of us who might not own that particular action - very nice! These editing videos were very well thought out, and executed amazingly. They’re sure to be an amazing tool in all of your newborn editing needs!”

Brighton Colorado Newborn Session

I absolutely adore this newborn session. As a little girl my favorite color was purple! Each session that I capture I strive to make all of the images go together nicely, this way if my clients want to create and album or wall art every image will look beautiful together.

Each of my clients will fill out a questionnaire when booking their session. Some of the questions that will be asked are what are your favorite colors, are their and specific props you would like and what is your nursery theme. I will put all of your preferences together to create a customized session just for you.

This sweet baby girl was a dream for her newborn session and I hope you enjoy the images as much as I do.

Studio Lighting Shopping List

Are you new to studio lighting and feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices on the market? And not sure exactly what you need? Don't worry I have been in your shoes and understand how confusing it can be.

I often get asked what lighting I use so I put together this little shopping list for you in hopes that it calms your nerves just a little. I promise studio lighting is a lot less scarier than you think it is and you will be using studio light in no time.

If you find this Blog Post helpful please feel free to share :) If you have any other questions please ask in the comments section and I would be happy to answer.

  1. First thing you are going to want to choose is a light. I like using a strobe, I feel like the lighting is consistent and easy to work with.

What is a Strobe? Wikipedia definition : A strobe light or stroboscopic lamp, commonly called a strobe, is a device used to produce regular flashes of light. It is one of a number of devices that can be used as a stroboscope.

Basically it is a light that Flashes. It is not a continuous light that stays on. It is a burst of light that freezes motion.

Now A lot of people have asked me what that light is that they see when I post a pull back and the light you are seeing is a modeling light. The model light basically  helps your camera focus and allows you to see where your light is falling on the subject. It does not interfere with your strobe and your model light should not be used as a main light source.

I use one Alien Bee 400 from http://paulcbuff.com/ for newborn and family.

People often ask why I do not use a 800. I find that the 800 is too strong for my liking and the 400 is perfect, I have never needed to use it at full power with a family session.

Alien Bee

Now another option is a  Einstein from http://paulcbuff.com/

The Einstein is a little more pricey and from what I have been told is a more consistent light. The reason I have not tried it yet is because I am happy with my AB 400. Don't fix what isn't broken right ?! ;) But in all honesty I have heard amazing things which is why I am adding it to the list.

UPDATE: July 2017 I have now switched to an   Einstein because I really wanted to be able to compare the two. I feel like it is a tad better but if you are on a budget the Alien Bee  is just fine. I did not see a mind blowing difference when switching.

2. The second thing you will need is a diffuser . This is what goes over your strobe.

I started with the PLM System from http://paulcbuff.com/

86" white PLM

86" White Diffusion Fabric

86" black out fabric

PLM white

PLM black cover

The PLM was AMAZING but it broke :( Unfortunately Paul Buff's  PLM's are on back order. So I decided to try the Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White / Black) with the white  Diffuser from https://www.bhphotovideo.com/. It worked just as well so either is a great option.

Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella.jpg

Why so big you ask? The bigger the light the softer. If you have a smaller space you can always go for a smaller PLM.

Now for a third option there is the 50X50 Westcott from  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/ . This is smaller and wider than the other two and in my experience produces more shadow but is a great diffuser.

3. The third thing you are going to need is a trigger and transmitter.

What are Triggers? They are what triggers your light to fire without being connected to a cord so you are wireless. One is for the top of your camera and one for the back of the strobe.

The ones I use are from Amazon and are Yongnuo brand. Make sure you get one that is compatible with your camera.

*note if you purchase the ones from Amazon you do not need the cord that comes with the triggers, you will need the sync cord that comes with your strobe.

Another more expensive option is the CyberSync receiver and Trigger From http://paulcbuff.com/ . You choose from a battery powered or AC powered transmitter.

4. Lastly you are going to need a light stand. Any heavy duty light stand that you have will do but I love my Matthews Reverse Stand from https://www.bhphotovideo.com/ since it goes all the way to the floor.

UPDATE: I have been getting a lot of questions on my reflector. A reflector is completely optional and it just depends on the lighting you are going for.

I use the 43" 5 in1 reflector  from Amazon . I use the silver side :)

I hope this blog post was helpful and I hope you come to love studio lighting like I have. Please feel free to comment below with any questions you may have.

PS: If you click over the bold words it will take you to the product page :)

If you are new to newborn photography or just looking to take your images to the next level you will want to watch Little Dreamers Props newborn posing tutorial. This tutorial covers so much! Flow posing, wrapping, editing composites quickly, and how to achieve the poses in her flow posing using little dreamers posing bags. Going to be making adjustments to my own flow posing after watching this, the transitions are so perfect for getting the most out of the beanbag without moving baby more than needed. Excellent tutorial!

They were really great and very helpful! I am a visual learner so I think these will help people with understanding how to accomplish these poses very well.

~Jessica Callahan Photography

I have purchased several newborn workshops before and most have left me with knowledge but not much hands on. This one left me feeling refreshed and ready to pull in a newborn to practice on. I love how she gave specific instructions on the simple posing like bum up and went into detail with others like the froggy pose. It really helped me to understand why the baby is set-up in specific ways as well as what works best to keep them comfy and safe. I also love all of the support you get by purchasing this tutorial. With the private group you have a place to ask questions, get guidance and work closer with others who want to learn and improve just like you! Hands down recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about posing and definitely recommend purchasing the Little Dreamer Posing Props as well. They are awesome and I love my beanbag I purchased a few years ago, still working great and is super awesome quality
